Home Care in Topsham
Do you need home care in Topsham for a parent or partner?
One independent carer, ten minutes from the city, and the same face at every visit
Topsham is a town where people stay. Families who have lived on the same street for forty years, in houses with steep stairs and views of the estuary, and who have no intention of leaving. Home care here is about making that possible. I will only take on a small number of Topsham homes, always the same ones, and I know the town well enough to park, walk and be on time.
Free visit, no obligation, and an honest answer about whether I am the right fit.
- Enhanced DBS checked
- Fully insured
- Free home visit
- Same carer, every visit
Home care in Topsham, and what makes the town different
Topsham sits on the east bank of the Exe estuary, four miles or so south-east of the city centre, and it has never quite agreed that it is part of Exeter. It has its own high street, its own station on the Exmouth line, its own museum, and a population that has, on the whole, been here a long time. A good number of people in Topsham have lived in the same house since the seventies or earlier, and they are not looking to move to a care home in Exeter or a bungalow in Exmouth. They want to stay where they are, near the river, near the shops they know and the neighbours who know them.
That is exactly what home care from an independent carer is for. Help with the things that have become hard, in the house they already live in, from one person who comes to know it well.
The houses, and why they matter
The old town, around the Strand, Fore Street and the streets running down to the Quay, is Georgian and older. Tall, narrow houses with the kitchen at the back, the bedrooms up two flights of stairs, and a bathroom that was added whenever the plumbing arrived. They are beautiful, and they were not built with a walking frame in mind. A lot of home care in Topsham is about helping somebody manage a house like that safely. Stairs taken slowly and properly. A wash at the sink downstairs on the days when the bathroom is one flight too many. An honest conversation about whether the bedroom should move down.
Further out, along Exeter Road and towards Newcourt, the housing is newer and flatter, semis and bungalows from the thirties onwards, and the challenges are different. Isolation, mostly, on a quiet street where the neighbours are at work all day.
Getting around Topsham
Anyone who has driven into the old town knows the drill. Narrow streets, one-way sections, and very little parking near the Strand. I plan for it. I park where I can, walk the last part, and build that into the visit time so nobody is short-changed. If a visit includes an outing, the Quay, the Goat Walk and the shops on Fore Street are all close enough to reach on foot at a slow pace. That is part of what makes Topsham such a good place to grow old in. For anything further, Darts Farm, the surgery, an appointment in the city, I drive.
Home care in Topsham, and who it suits
Typically older people living alone, often widowed, often with children who moved away for work and ring every evening. Sometimes a couple where one is caring for the other and is quietly running out of steam. Occasionally somebody younger with a long-term condition who wants help with the practical things and nothing else. What they have in common is that they want the same person, not a rota, and they want somebody who knows Topsham rather than somebody who has been sent here from the other side of the city.
If what is needed goes beyond what one carer can safely provide, I will say so at the first visit and help you find the right service. It is better said early.

Why an independent carer works well in Topsham
-
Ten minutes from the city
Topsham is a short drive down Topsham Road from the rest of my patch, so visits here start on time and are not squeezed by the journey.
-
I know the streets
The old town is narrow, one-way in places and short on parking. I park where I can and walk the last bit, which is what everyone in Topsham does.
-
Steep houses, careful help
A lot of Topsham homes are old, tall and have stairs that were built for people in a hurry. Moving safely on them is something I am trained for.
-
Somewhere to walk to
Few places make getting out easier. The Quay, the Strand, the Goat Walk and a bench with a view of the estuary are all within a slow stroll of most front doors.
-
Shops on foot
Fore Street still has a butcher, a baker, a chemist and a post office. A visit can include the shopping, done together rather than delivered.
-
Family often further away
Many people in Topsham have children who moved for work. A message after each visit, and someone local who knows the house, is what I can offer those families.
How care in Topsham gets started
-
Step 1: A phone call
Tell me what is going on. No script and no sales pitch. If it is not something I can safely take on, I will say so on that call.
-
Step 2: A visit, free of charge
I come to you. We sit down, talk through what would actually help, and you decide whether I am the right fit. No charge and no obligation.
-
Step 3: A written agreement
Days, times, what I will do and what it costs, in plain English. Yours to keep, and nothing in it changes without asking you first.
-
Step 4: We start
Same carer, every visit. After a few weeks I know the routine, the neighbours, and which mug is the right one.
Getting out and about in Topsham
Not being indoors all day is one of the things families ask for most, and one of the first things a rushed visit drops. These are the sort of places a visit in Topsham might include, depending on the weather and how someone is feeling that day.
-
The Goat Walk and Bowling Green Marsh
The riverside path from the bottom of the Strand along the estuary, flat and level, with the bird reserve at the end. A short outing that most people can manage with a hand to hold.
-
Topsham Museum
A late 17th century merchant house on the Strand with the estuary behind. Closed for structural repairs at the moment. When it reopens it is free to visit and a good reason to get out on a dull afternoon.

Darts Farm
Just over the Clyst at Clyst St George. A food hall, a cafe and somewhere to sit with a coffee and watch people. Level access and easy parking.

Hourly rate
£20 to £40 per hour
Where in that range depends on what is needed. I give you one fixed figure at the free first visit, in writing, before anything is agreed.
- The rate is all in. Mileage is included, there is no VAT to add, and there is no registration fee or charge for the first visit.
- Minimum visit one hour. Usual minimum term three months, paid in advance, open for discussion at the first visit.
- A visit I miss, or cannot complete because I am ill, is not charged. The time is carried over to another visit or refunded, whichever you prefer.
- A visit you cancel with 48 hours notice is carried over. With less notice it is charged.
- 14 days to change your mind after signing the agreement. Visits you asked me in writing to start in that time are paid for.
- Two weeks notice to end the arrangement, from either of us. If it ends early you pay for the visits made and the notice period, and the rest is returned.
Questions from families in Topsham
Which parts of Topsham do you cover?
All of it. The old town around the Strand, Fore Street and the Quay, the streets off Elm Grove Road and Exeter Road, and the newer housing towards Newcourt and Clyst St George. Topsham is EX3, and it sits comfortably inside my patch.
What about Clyst St George, Ebford and Exton?
Clyst St George and Ebford, yes. They are minutes from Topsham and EX3. Exton is a little further towards Exmouth and I would want to talk it through, because the tight patch is what keeps my visits on time. Ring me and I will give you a straight answer.
My mother lives alone in an old Topsham house with steep stairs. Can you help?
Very likely, and it is a situation I am set up for. I am trained in moving and handling and I will look at the stairs, the bathroom and the bedroom at the free first visit. If a stairlift or a downstairs bedroom would make the difference, I will say so. If a move needs two people, I will say that too.
Do you cover the whole day in Topsham?
Visits at agreed times, any day of the week, morning, afternoon or evening. I do not offer overnight or live-in care. If somebody needs help through the night, that is something family or a different service would need to cover, and I will say so at the first call.
